The cast and creative team behind The Comedy About Spies appeared on BBC London News to talk about the upcoming Mischief comedy which returns to the West End from the 1 August
Henry Shields, Henry Lewis, Nancy Zamit, and Bryony Corrigan sat down with BBC reporter Alice Bhandhukravi to talk about the hilarious spoof comedy that is taking over the Adelphi this summer.
“Disaster ensues from the word go,” Henry Shields says, who co-wrote the show alongside Lewis and also appears as Bernard in the show. He continues, “It is about a British couple on holiday in London and they accidentally become embroiled in this big spy escapade,”
Set in the sixties, The Comedy About Spies revolves around CIA and KGB spies who converge on London’s Piccadilly Hotel, in pursuit of top-secret weapon plans that have been pilfered by a British agent. However, a British couple, a hapless actor, and a whole slew of double agents spiral the mission out of control.
“It has a really good combination of really silly and quite intelligent comedy slammed together,” says Zamit, who plays Janet Buchanan in the show. “You get really clever jokes and very stupid jokes all in one play.”
Bryony Corrigan, who appears as Elena Popova, speaks on spoofing sixties spy shows. “The genre is really cool. That kind of spy-James Bond, but to also spoof that in a Austin Powers-y, but even more silly and farcical, way is really appealing.”
“London was very central through the Cold War,” says co-writer and Douglas Woodbead actor Henry Lewis. “There’s some amazing visuals from the sixties in London.”
Following a successful, award-winning run in the West End in 2025, The Comedy About Spies mission starts in August for 8 weeks only.
